Western Massachusetts lost a pioneer Friday, (July 2) when longtime newsman Keith Silver passed away at the age of 80. Beginning in 1956 when Keith Silver joined radio station WSPR, to his days as the News Director at Channel 22, Keith was loved and respected by his friends, colleagues, and even those of us who worked at the other news organizations in the area.
Keith began as a television news reporter at Channel 22 in 1964 and worked his way up to head of the news operation. With experience, respect, and humor, Keith guided the news department at WWLP-TV to unprecedented success.
In
2008 Keith Silver was honored by the Valley Press
Club, with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, for his many years
of dedicated service to quality journalism in the Pioneer Valley. Keith also served as a Board Member of
the Valley Press Club for decades, helping to mentor young journalists and
raise funds for journalism scholarships.
Those of us in the news business spend decades reporting on the passing of
public figures, and we sometimes wonder how we'll be remembered when our time
comes. Well today, those of us who knew Keith Silver are remembering an
outstanding newsman, a respected colleague, and a wonderful friend. Old newsmen
never die, they will always remain in our hearts and minds forever.

The 2010 Valley Press Club Communication and Leadership Conference was held at Western New England College Wednesday April 7. The conference was presented in partnership with the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce and the AD Club of Western Mass. Conference attendees enjoyed 10 media and marketing workshops. Vincent D'Addario received the Valley Press Club's 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award for over 40 years as a professional news photojournalist. Vinnie is a former Photojournalist with the Republican newspaper and president of the Valley Press Club.
The Valley Press Club also celebrated its 50th Anniversary and received an award commemorating the decades of Scholarships the club has awarded since the 1960s - Over $100,000 in scholarships to local high school students pursuing careers in journalism. The annual event has been held at Western New England College for the past seven years.

The 2010 annual Press Club Roast was held on Friday evening May 7, at the John Boyle O'Reilly Club Springfield, MA. Among the guests were, Mayors Domenic Sarno, Elaine Pluta and Mike Bissonnette, Sheriff Deputy Ray Fyre, Holyoke Police Chief Anthony Scott, Springfield City Councilors Henry Twriggs, Tim Allen Clodo Concepcion and many other notorious dignitaries.
